Study Guide To Apply For Master's In Canada.

Apparently, Canada is one of the most dreamed places to study in. The country is a fascinating place for international students. There are quite a number of reasons to study in Canada. When it comes to global ratings, of course, you get to see universities in Canada making the lists.

Canada offers an interesting variety of college models: universities, colleges, polytechnics. Canadian college and university graduates are highly-valued on the job market, and people who study there have been able to find great jobs in any field they are interested in.

www.arrhem.com

Some other reasons to study in Canada are:

1. Post-Masters opportunities – If you’re keen to stay in Canada after finishing your studies, you might be eligible for a post- graduation work permit, allowing you to work in the country for the same duration as your programme.

2. Quality of life – The standard of living in Canada is extremely high, and the nation as a whole is a safe and stable environment in which to study.

Top 10 Canadian Universities in 2018

  • University of Toronto
  • University of British Columbia
  • McGill University
  • McMaster University
  • University of Montreal
  • University of Alberta
  • University of Calgary
  • University of Ottawa
  • University of Waterloo
  • Western University

How to apply to universities in Canada

Please note: Each university in Canada has its own system on their website that allows future students to apply for and enroll in their degree programmes. So, once you select the university of your choice, you can go through their application and submit your materials there.

Here are some of the basic requirements you’ll need for every application:

  • A scan of your diploma (high school or Bachelor’s degree);
  • A transcript/record of your previous courses;
  • A scan of your passport;
  • Your CV;
  • Testing scores;
  • Evidence of scholarship or funding;
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Portfolio and/or writing samples.

How to Apply for a Masters in Canada

Academic requirements

  • You will be expected to have a minimum GPA (often a 3.0/4.0 or its international equivalent such a UK upper second class bachelor) for your undergraduate degree.
  • Depending on your subject area, you may be asked to provide a graduate entry test score such as a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Language
  • If English is not your first language you will have to give evidence of proficiency through an English language test such as TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Similar requirements will apply in French if you apply for a bilingual programme or a course delivered entirely in French.

Application process
The application process is similar to that of other countries. You’ll have to submit the following as part of your application:

  • A completed application form, which is often submitted online
  • A certified copy of your qualifications and transcripts
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Proof of English and/or French proficiency, depending on the programme that you are applying for
  • References/recommendation letters
  • Letter of motivation/personal statement

If you’ve completed post-secondary education outside of Canada, you might have to undergo an evaluation to determine the Canadian equivalent of your qualification and to verify the academic documentation that you’ve submitted. You’ll have to pay an
international credential evaluation fee, unless you already have a third party international credential evaluation report.

Your application will generally be assessed by a central office to ensure you meet all the minimum entry requirements. It is then sent to the faculty/school, which will assess the
academic quality and suitability of your application for your programme of choice.

If you are successful, you will receive a letter of admission, which you will need to be able to apply for a visa or scholarship (if relevant) and to complete your enrolment before registration.

English-language Tests
To apply to study in Canada, you will need to provide proof you have a diploma for your English proficiency. The certificates generally accepted by the universities in Canada are:

  • TOEFL
  • IELTS
  • C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency

Still, you should always check on your university’s website, just to be sure what the exact requirements are.

Application deadlines for Canada
There are two application sessions in Canadian universities. That is why if you plan on starting in winter, the application deadline is the 1st of September, while the one for summer enrolments is the 1st of March. Of course, as you probably expect, these deadlines depend on the university and the programme, so be sure to double-check if these deadlines also apply to you, as well.

Tuition and Fee
Masters fees and funding in Canada Tuition fees for international students in Canada are relatively affordable compared to their counterparts in the UK and America, with most programmes costing somewhere between CAD $13,000 and CAD $20,500 (USD $9,930-16,430). Arts and Humanities subjects will be at the lower end of this scale, programs such as Dentistry, Architecture and Business nearer the top. Domestic Canadian students generally pay tuition fees at around half the rate paid by foreign students.

There are several funding opportunities for international students in Canada, as well as scholarships offered by individual universities designed to attract talented overseas postgraduates.

What To Consider Before Going For Postgraduate Studies.

www.arrhem.com

Enrolling onto a postgraduate degree is not a small step. This would involve committing time, money, and yourself to a single discipline for at least a year. It goes without saying that it needs to be a considered choice, not only in terms of what subject you pick but also whether it is the right choice for you as an individual.Hence, before you decide to opt for further study, consider the points below to ensure you’re fully prepared for your postgraduate degree:

1.  CHECK OUT UNIVERSITIES OF GOOD STANDARDS

University rankings are an invaluable source of information at your disposal when researching a prospective course : you can quickly and easily assess a
location’s suitability in terms of teaching, facilities, and graduate employment success with a few Google searches.

If you can, get to know recent graduates or current students of the university in question. This will give you a hands-on understanding of what the environment is really like, alongside the facts and figures as captured in league-table rankings.There is nothing more valuable than a personal recommendation – so get talking. Ask people who are doing/ have done post graduate studies.

2.  PLAN HOW YOU WILL SCHEDULE YOUR STUDIES

At this point you should also consider if you want to undertake a full-time or part-time degree. Are you wanting to continue or take up part-time employment alongside your study, or can you afford to apply yourself entirely to your course without an income? Iron out these variables now to ensure that your choice further down the line is an informed one. Nothing should surprise you once you have enrolled at university – so do the background work in advance to make sure you don’t uncover any red flags when it’s too late to make a change.

3.  FIND OUT EXTRA BENEFITS OF DOING POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

You know you’ll come out with a postgraduate degree in your chosen field – but what else can the university offer you? Is there the option to study abroad or to be on placement during teaching? Research your prospective lecturers and professors – are they established in their field? What accolades do they have to their name? Can they connect you with valuable contacts in the industry? Discover what advice they can offer in addition to their teaching.

4.  BE SURE OF WHY YOU WANT TO DO IT

It’s all too easy to get carried away with the application process and speed ahead without realizing, but you should take a step back and ask yourself one question before hitting submit: why do I really want to do a postgraduate degree?
The answer should be something along the lines of the fact you want to further yourself professionally in a field that you’re passionate about.

A postgraduate degree isn’t something to just want to do  “because my friends are doing it” or “because I don’t know what I want to do yet, so I’m just continuing university ". As we’ve said before, you’ll be applying your time, money, and yourself to a discipline for a prolonged period of time, so you need to be fully invested in it, and ready for the hours of hard work, stress, and headaches it will bring.Preparation is the key to success – so before you undertake a postgraduate degree, ensure that you are fully prepared.

How To Apply For A PhD Study In Canada.

www.arrhem.com

Admission Requirement

The requirements to study in Canada at doctorate level vary between universities and courses, but you generally need the following:

  • A master’s degree in a related field, with strong grades and proven research ability and potential.
  • Proof of language ability, depending on whether you study in English or French, if either language is not your first language and you haven’t previously studied in either language. (Some programs in French-speaking Quebec are conducted in both languages).
  • A strong score in a graduate admissions test such as the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

In exceptional cases, you may be able to study a PhD with “accelerated admission” – that is, without a master’s degree. In this process, you’ll need to have outstanding grades in the last two years of your bachelor’s degree (a first- class average) and other demonstrations of your high academic potential, such as research publications.

How long are PhDs in Canada?

Most PhDs in Canada take about four to six years to complete.

How To Apply
Although the admissions process can vary between Canadian universities, you’ll generally need to follow the following steps to apply for a PhD:

1. Decide the course you want to apply for. Identifying your supervisor and chosen research topic. This may be an advertised, structured PhD in which the scope of the research is already outlined by the university (particularly in the sciences), or alternatively
(particularly in arts and humanities) you could suggest and outline your own research project with an open PhD. Once you’ve found a supervisor, some universities may ask for a letter of support from your chosen supervisor to be included in your application documents.

2. If applying for an open PhD, you’ll need to submit a research proposal following the guidelines set by your university and generally outlining what you want to research, and why this is a worthwhile project.

3. Apply online, paying the appropriate application fee and attaching the necessary documents to your application. This could be all or some of the following:

  • Statement of purpose – this should outline your background and academic/professional experience, including any awards, publications or relevant experience you can offer. You should also discuss your career goals and anything else stipulated by the university, keeping to the word limit.
  • Two or three letters of reference (including one from your intended supervisor). Your referees should be academic, where possible.
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates – Canadian universities may require that your university mails an official transcript, which should be in English or accompanied by a perfectly translated document.
  • Writing sample (most likely for arts and humanities PhDs)
  • Your Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Language test results, if needed Portfolio of creative work (if applying for an arts/humanities PhD)
  • Some Canadian universities may also ask you to attend an admission interview.

4. Once accepted, the next step is to apply for your study permit which acts as your student visa for your stay. You should also take out health insurance, and check your university’s website for orientation advice.

How much does it cost to study a PhD in Canada?

Tuition fees for a PhD in Canada vary between universities and courses, and will generally be around twice that of fees for Canadian students. An exception to this is the University of Toronto, where most international PhD students will pay the same tuition fees as domestic students, starting from fall 2018.

To give you an example of the cost of a PhD in Canada, the University of British Columbia charges CA$7,641 (~US$5,760) per year for Masters by Research or PhDs, while PhDs are CA$$10,240 (~US $7,700) in years one and two at the University of Manitoba.

Can you work in Canada part-time during your studies?

Yes, all full-time students with a valid study permit can work part-time on or off campus for up to 20 hours per week during university semesters and full time during semester breaks. However, some PhD courses may stipulate that you shouldn’t work for more than 10 hours per week during term time – particularly if you’ve been granted
funding to study in Canada. It’s also important to consider that your PhD will take up a considerable amount of time and challenging work, so you might prefer to focus entirely on your studies. Also, it’s not advised to rely on part-time

Can you stay and work in Canada after your PhD?

Yes – if you’d like to stay after graduation to find work in Canada, you can apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) which allows you to stay and gain valuable work experience for a maximum of three years. And if you’re interested in becoming a permanent resident, this post-graduation work experience helps you to qualify to apply for permanent residency in Canada via Express Entry.
