How to apply for Admission?

Language requirements
Courses at the University of Ottawa are given in English, French or both languages. To be admitted, you must therefore master one of the two official languages as demonstrated by a satisfactory score on one of the language tests recognized by the University. The University of Ottawa reserves the right to request the result of a language test at any time, if necessary.

English-language programs
If you’re applying for an English-language program and you have not completed at least three years full time in an institution where English is the only language of instruction (aside from in language courses), located in a country where English is an official language, you must provide your official score in one of the English-language tests recognized by the University.

French-language programs
If you are applying for a French- language program and you have not completed at least three years of full-time study in an institution where French is the only language of instruction (aside from in language courses), located in a country having French as an official language, you must provide us with your official results in one of the French language tests recognized by the University.

Study in UK: Muriel Smith University of Edinburgh Postgraduate Scholarship

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh is now accepting applications for the Muriel Smith Scholarship to eligible candidates to pursue postgraduate programme. These scholarships are opened to Home/EU and overseas students.

The University of Edinburgh is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland’s ancient universities. The university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city of Edinburgh, with many of the buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the university.

Scholarship Benefits
The award will covers:

  • Tuition fees for a maximum of one year at the Home/EU rate for the chosen Masters programme of study (up to a maximum of £10,100).  Successful overseas applicants will be liable for the difference between the Home/EU and Overseas fees rates.


Eligible Nationalities
Home/EU and overseas students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Entrance Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have applied for a Masters programme of study within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures before 11th April 2019. Their references must have been submitted by 25th April 2019.
  • The award will support one female postgraduate master’s student who has been domiciled in Scotland for a minimum of 4 years prior to the commencement of the MSc programme.


Applicants to the following degree programmes are eligible:

  • Masters by Research (MScR) French Studies or Hispanic (Peninsular Spanish) Studies
  • MSc Translation Studies, specialising in French or Spanish


PhD students are not eligible to apply for this scheme.

The scholarship is to be awarded in one year of study only, part-time students will have the Home/EU tuition fees paid in each of the two years of study.

Study in Netherlands: Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES)


The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES) is a full scholarship of €25,000 (covering tuition and living expenses) for one academic year with the possibility of extension for a second year (for two-year Master’s programmes). The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship is made possible by the Amsterdam University Fund with the help of alumni of the University of Amsterdam.


The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a public university located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The UvA is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the VU University Amsterdam (VU). Established in 1632, The University is the largest university in the Netherlands by enrollment. The main campus is located in central Amsterdam, with a few faculties located in adjacent boroughs. In 2014, it was ranked 50th in the world, 15th in Europe and 1st in the Netherlands by the QS World University Rankings. The university placed in the top 50 worldwide in seven fields in the 2011 QS World University Rankings in the fields of linguistics, sociology, philosophy, geography, science, Economics and econometrics, and accountancy and finance.

Requirements

Candidates wishing to apply for an AES programme should: 

  • not have the nationality of one of the countries of the EU/EEA or Suisse
  • not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering; for more information please refer here).
  • not be eligible to pay the reduced tuition fee rate for EEA students at the UvA
  • not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AES
  • have submitted a complete application to one of the MSc programmes (see the website of your MSc programme for the application and admission procedure)
  • have been (or will be) admitted for the first time to one of the MSc programmes at the UvA
  • be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable)
  • have completed their previous academic programme no longer than 3 years ago

  • The International Team should be notified as soon as possible of any change in nationality, type of residence permit or additional financial support throughout the academic year.

Selection criteria for the scholarship

The University of Amsterdam has a limited number of Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships available. In addition to the admission requirements of the Master's programme, eligible candidates are selected on the basis of their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field as evidenced by: 

  • The candidate’s academic records. Students belonging to the top 10% of graduates from their class can apply. This generally means an overall GPA equivalent to:
    • 3.5 (American system, 4-point scale)
    • 1st class honours/ upper division (British system)
    • 8+ (Dutch EC-system, 10-point scale);
  • The academic quality of the educational institute where the (under)graduate degree has been (or will be) obtained;
  • The quality of the letter of motivation (maximum 500 words), in which the candidate explains the reasons for choosing the specific Master’s programme in a broader context and the relevance of obtaining this scholarship for the candidate’s future academic career;
  • The candidate’s curriculum vitae, including a description of extracurricular activities such as participation in student commissions, international experience, sports or music at a high level or volunteer work;
  • Proof of English proficiency
    • TOEFL (internet-based); overall score of 100, with a minimum score of 22 in each of the four components
    • IELTS (academic); overall score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four components
    • A Cambridge Examination Score with a minimum test result of C1 Advanced (CAE) A or B will also be accepted. For the C2 Proficiency test (CPE) a minimal score of C is required;
  • The quality of the application as a whole (completeness, accuracy, consistency).

Failure to meet one or more of the requirements or selection criteria automatically means that the student is not eligible for this scholarship.


How to apply

Application for the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship is part of the application procedure for the Master’s programme of your choice. On your application form we ask whether you want to be considered for a UvA scholarship. Please check this box if you want to be considered and if you fulfill all requirements mentioned above.


Furthermore, enclose a paragraph in your motivation letter for the MSc Programme in which you explain why you wish to be nominated for the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship and what it would mean for your future academic career. This motivation letter should be uploaded in DataNose.


After applying, the coordinators of the MSc Programmes decide which students qualify to apply for the scholarship. All students will be informed as soon as possible.


Two-year Master’s programme

Students who are awarded an AES are expected to complete their first year of study with good in order to receive the scholarship for the second year as well. The Faculty of Science requires that students satisfy the supplementary requirements imposed on students by the faculty and programme, such as the obligation to attend all classes, good progress and effort.

Study in Belgium: Master Mind Scholarships at KU Leuven

Master Mind Scholarships is provided by the Government of Flanders and it is awarded to outstanding students taking a master's degree programme in Flanders. The 2019-2020 edition of the scholarship programme has now been launched.
 
The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) is a research university in the Dutch-speaking town of Leuven in Flanders, Belgium. It conducts teaching, research, and services in the sciences, engineering, humanities, medicine, law, and social sciences. KU Leuven is the largest university in Belgium and the Low Countries. In 2017-18, more than 58,000 students were enrolled. Its primary language of instruction is Dutch, although several programs are taught in English, particularly graduate degrees.

KU Leuven consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the world. As of 2016-2017, It ranks 40th globally according to Times Higher Education, 79th according to QS World University Rankings, and 93rd according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. According to Thomson Reuters, in 2016, 2017 and 2018, KU Leuven researchers have filed more patents than any other university in Europe; its patents are also the most cited by external academics. As such, KU Leuven was ranked first in the publication's annual list of Europe's most innovative universities for those three years. A number of its programs rank within the top 100 in the world according to QS World University Rankings by Subject. It is the highest-ranked university from the Low Countries.

KU Leuven will nominate up to 20 outstanding students who will start a master’s programme next academic year. In order to be eligible, you have to complete your application for an eligible master’s programme at KU Leuven.





Eligibility requirements
  • The student has applied for an eligible master’s programme at KU Leuven. Please consult the list of master's programmes that qualify for a 2019-2020 Master Mind Scholarship.
  • The student has a high standard of academic performance and potential.
    The student has a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 out of 4.0. Please consult the GPA calculator.
  • The student has a good knowledge and command of the language of instruction of the master’s programme, regardless of the minimum scores required by the master's programme:
o    a minimum score of 7 on the IELTS test
o    a minimum score of 94 on the TOEFL test
o    a similar result in another official language test
  • All nationalities are eligible. The previous degree obtained should be from a higher education institution located outside Flanders.
  • Students who are already enrolled in a Flemish higher education institution are not eligible.
  • Student mobility during the master's programme is allowed. However, at least half of the credits of the master's programme must be obtained at the Flemish higher education institution.

Scholarship modalities
  • The duration of the mobility is minimum 1 academic year and maximum the full duration of the master’s programme.
  • The student receives a maximum scholarship of € 8,000 per academic year.
  • Master Mind Scholarship holders pay a reduced tuition fee. The rate for the 2018-2019 academic year is € 108.8. This rate may increase slightly in the following years.

How to express your interest in a Master Mind scholarship at KU Leuven

Procedure and timing

  • The master's programmes are invited to nominate students.
  • The KU Leuven will nominate up to 20 students. The following elements will be taken into account when assessing the application files: academic performance, academic awards, motivation, relevant experience, demonstrated leadership abilities, sense of commitment, top applicant profile.
  • KU Leuven will inform the nominated students in March about the outcome of the preselection and invite them to complete the online Master Mind Application in April 2019.
  • The final selection will be made by the Selection Committee of the Flemish Government.
  • The selection results will be announced in June 2019.
