Application, scholarships, requirements and student fees

In most cases, applications to Swedish universities can be made at Universityadmissions.se . There you create a personal account to manage your application(s). The website is also a source of information about scholarships, requirements, student fees and other important study related subjects for international students.

Again, the universities’ own official web pages typically present more detailed info regarding programmes and courses, such as student fees and specific requirements.

Admission Intake period

  • 16 October – 15 January: Apply at Universityadmissions.se and pay your fee online (if required)
  • 1 December – end of January: Send in supporting documents and pay application fee (if you haven’t already done so) by the deadline
  • Beginning of February: Apply for a scholarship
  • Mid- to Late March: Check first selection results and reply to your offer
  • Beginning of April: Deadline for replying to your admissions and scholarship offers
  • April: Plan your accommodation
  • Middle of April: Second selection round
  • April – June: Pay first tuition fee first installment, apply for residence permit
  • End of August: Semester starts


Tuition fees in Sweden
First let’s examine the general tuition in Sweden. A study in Swedish higher institutions is not overly expensive. Yearly higher education costs in Sweden vary depending on the university and program. 

Tuition fees in Sweden range from approximately SEK 80,000 per year (approximately 8,300 EUR or 9,200 USD as of Oct, 2016) to SEK 130,000 (or approximately 13,000 EUR or $14,600 USD as of Oct, 2016).

All students in Sweden need to buy their own textbooks and on average spend 750 SEK/month for this purpose.

Tuition Fees in Stockholm University

  • Tuition and application fees do not apply to students from the EU/EEA/Switzerland.
  • For non-EU/EEA and Switzerland citizens, the one-off application fee is £90 (SEK 900) and the tuition fee is approximately £8,910- 13,860 (SEK 90,000-140,000) per academic year.
